Celebrate Honest Abe’s Birthday with a Hometown Road Trip!
February 12 is the birthday of beloved American President Abraham Lincoln. What better way to celebrate than to take the whole family to his birthplace, Springfield, IL. We picked a few essential stops to get your Lincoln’s Birthday road trip planning started!
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum
If you only visit one place in Springfield, this is it. One of the most-visited presidential libraries, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum utilizes a modern approach to presenting the life, legacy, and artifacts of our 16th U.S. president and his family. Traditional displays are combined with immersive experiences to create a family-friendly history lesson you’ll never forget.
Ever watch those shows where you get to see inside celebrity homes? This is that, but instead of a Kardashian, this National Historic Site is the home of one of the greatest presidents in U.S. History. And it’s not a TV show. It’s a tour, where you get to walk through the actual house where Honest Abe lived on his way to political fame.
Mr. Lincoln’s Souvenir & Gift Shop
It’s not a vacation until you grab a souvenir or two to remember it by, and there’s no more perfect place to get one than Mr. Lincoln’s Souvenir & Gift Shop. Just make sure to check their Facebook page for hours. They’re currently closed for the winter, but scheduled to reopen mid-February!
There is so much more to explore in Springfield, but these three destinations should give you a solid start. To learn more about the sights around Lincoln’s hometown, visit the official Springfield, IL website.
